Vincent Van Gogh Once Said…

So I’m starting a daily affirmation, daily quote, maybe some day there will be more than one but I want to remind myself everyday what I’m fighting for. Myself.

Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 and he died on 29 July 1890. Van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything? – Vincent Van Gogh

I believe Van Gogh was right about life and courage. It takes a lot of courage to live. The ones most courageous are those that find that courage in themselves to continue on after all they’ve been through.

I’ve long enjoyed Van Gogh and was fortunate enough to visit Monastère Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the hospital where Van Gogh spent a year and completed over a hundred paintings including Starry Night, Irises, many self-portraits, walking through the little room he occupied and more. Last year he was the featured artist at Carriers de Lumieres in La Bau Provence. There is a large cave in the mountains and the interior has been sculpted to facilitate the projection of his work that has been digitalized. Susan Fletcher wrote a charming book about Van Gogh’s stay in the hospital and much of it is based on his experience there. The title; Let Me Tell You About A Man I Know. It is written from the perspective of the hospital warden’s wife. A good read anytime.

I’m a huge fan of his work and appreciate you telling me about the book. I’ll track it down somehow. Have to say I’m a bit jealous that you got to go to the hospital and areas. That’s on my things to do. Have you read Dear Theo? It’s Vincent’s letters to his brother Theo.

This years artist at the cave in La Bau is Salvador Dali! I’m trying to find a way to go. Provence is a few hours east of where I live on the Mediterranean but well worth it. It isn’t the cheapest place to stay but there is an amazing organic restaurant and so much more in Saint Remy.
I do have a ragged old copy of Dear Theo in one of my many giant TBR stacks… Thanks. I shall pull it out and put it a little closer to where I usually grab the next read from…
